It happens at least once a day. No- it’s not a ball hitting a window, a tree plummeting into the side of the house or a child jumping off the upstairs bannister….(That only happened once. Thank God.) No- it’s the sound of someone tripping over the step stool I keep at the end of our kitchen island, between the kitchen table and the island, which could be considered a high-traffic area.
It’s happened when I was on crutches, it’s happened after surgeries, it’s happened to my oldest, middle and youngest, it’s happened to my husband and I always say the same thing:
“Are you ok? You should watch where you’re going.” (Yes, even when I trip over it. What? You don’t reprimand yourself? I thought everyone does that….forget I said that. Erase!)
Yesterday, I had a thought: “I could move that stool.”
I shoved it in front of the stationary part of the door wall. No one has tripped over it, since.
I don’t know what took me so long to move that step stool. I wonder how many bumps and bruises and irritated glances could have been avoided if I’d have moved it sooner.
This morning, I wondered how many of us have other step stools we keep tripping over… even though we KNOW they are there.
Websites that pull us into things we don’t want to be in. (From Porn to time or money wasting games the internet has it all.)
People who drag us down to levels or into places and things that trip us up. (It could be attitudes, actions- or sexual temptations)
TV shows, books other things that make us stumble… into coveting a different kind of life, spouse or family. Or things. (The problem with coveting isn’t just biblical- learning to be content is a primary goal of many spiritual and cultural practices.) Or just plain pump our heads with stress, fear, or garbage. (Confession: Hoarders stresses me out. I worry about people. I should stop watching it as motivation to clean. Justsayin.)
Stuff that trips us up in one way or another.
I’m not the “no TV no Media” type…. I’m just wondering if there are other lessons to be found in that step stool.
Is there something You should “move” out of your life?
Try it today….. you just might find yourself less bumped and bruised by the end of the week….
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1: 12-15
Dear Lord- give me wisdom to see the things I stumble over and courage to move either them, or me. I love you Lord- amen
