Finding Art in Mothering….Music

Music 1 a: the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity b: vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony2 a: an agreeable sound

There is music in mothering.  Not just lullabye and clean up songs but true rhythm and beat.  The music of motherhood is found in the daily pattern.

Somedays, the rhythm is an enchanting beat that draws you into it’s dance. One : Wake, dress, Two: Feed, clean. Three: Teach, clean….There is a certain predictability and pattern that plays like dance music.

Other days, the music has a maddening, repetitive beat you can’t get out of your head.  Like being constantly “rick-rolled” only not as exciting…. The laundry hamper that empties on every down beat and fills at the speed of sixteenth notes,   the dishes that dirty like an annoying preschool cartoon melody jacked up on Starbucks, and the toilets that overflow like a caucaphonous overture that builds to a plungered forte’.

Then, there is the alternative beat that staccatos from the back seat when three children of various ages suddenly discover their primal need for “personal space” and the coinciding desire to INVADE said space of others.  Like most art– the music of mothering is sometimes pleasant and sometimes challenging, but always propels you toward the next song.

If my mothering life had a “playlist” it would be as varied as the one on my ipod. My children’s ages span College, High school and first grades. In addition to the back beat of their developmental phase there is the melody of their unique personality.

They are as different developmentally as rock, blues and alternative music, but, yet our daily interactions are still in essence- mothering.  Like music of all forms.. is still music, and music- is art.

There is not just an art to mothering- but art IN mothering if you know how to look…

What are you listening to or singing today?
